01 · THE PLACE
AC Hotel Berlin Humboldthain lobby with Mount Starling artworks

The location became the brief.

The hotel sits at Berlin's Humboldthain. Instead of treating the walls as surfaces to be decorated, Mount Starling used the name and the place as the starting point for the entire concept: Alexander von Humboldt, his journeys, and the visual culture that grew around his expeditions.

A place with a story should not receive generic wall art.

02 · THE SOURCE
Historical mountain landscape used as source material for the Humboldt concept

From historical imagery to a new visual language.

The concept drew on historical visual material connected with Humboldt's travels: landscapes, geographical studies, scientific illustration and nineteenth-century interpretations of the regions he explored. Rather than reproducing these images as museum pieces, Mount Starling treated them as creative source material.

Selected motifs were restored, cropped, enlarged, recoloured and recomposed into a coherent family of contemporary works. The result retains the atmosphere of historical expedition imagery while belonging unmistakably to a modern hotel interior.

03 · THE FORM
Two volcanoes in an open black frame

The frame became part of the artwork.

The installation was developed as a wall composition rather than a conventional series of framed pictures. Different proportions, open areas and asymmetric placements allow the architecture of the black frames, the wall and the image itself to become one system.

The unusually tall, wide and partial image formats create rhythm across the lobby wall and turn the sequence into an installation that changes as the guest moves through the space.

04 · THE PRODUCTION
Detail of the bronze-toned mountain landscape

Curatorial thinking, premium production.

The works were produced as premium pigment prints on archival paper and combined with custom-made black framing. Mount Starling coordinated the visual treatment, production logic and physical presentation as one project rather than treating printing and framing as separate afterthoughts.

The detailed project documentation describes a 16-colour premium pigment-print process, archival paper and bespoke framing. Final technical specifications can be updated here once the original production records are confirmed.

THE MOUNT STARLING METHOD

From place
to visual identity.

01

Discover

Location, architecture, brand and cultural context.

02

Research

Historical sources, image worlds and relevant narratives.

03

Transform

Crop, colour, scale, reinterpret and build a coherent family.

04

Produce

Choose the right print, material and framing logic for the project.

05

Install

Turn individual works into a spatial composition.

THE RESULT

Not decoration.
A story in space.

The Humboldt project is a compact example of what Mount Starling can offer hospitality and interior-design partners: an art concept that starts with the identity of a place rather than with a catalogue.

Existing visual material becomes a point of departure. The project-specific idea determines the selection, transformation, format, production and installation.
